Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate profit on a stock?

Profit equals your sale proceeds minus your total cost. Proceeds are the sell price times shares minus the sell commission; cost is the buy price times shares plus the buy commission. Add any dividends received to get total profit.

What is my break-even price?

The break-even price is the sell price per share at which your total profit is zero after all commissions. Sell above it and you make money; sell below it and you take a loss.

How is annualized return calculated?

Annualized return restates your total return as a yearly rate, so trades of different lengths can be compared. The calculator compounds your total return over 365 / holding-days, the same way CAGR works.
